The Cardiac Surgical Technologist, working under the direct supervision of the Cardiac Surgery Coordinator or perioperative nurse, performs the duties of a scrub person. Prepares supplies for case, sets up and maintains the sterile field, passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon, readies used instruments for the cleaning and resterilization process. Able to take call for cardiothoracic cases and is the back-up tech for all other surgical emergencies in the Main OR, Cath Lab and EP Lab

Required: High School Diploma and successful completion of accredited Surgical Technology training program

Preferred: Graduate of an accredited AA/AS degree program

Licensure/Certification

Required: AHA-approved Basic Life Support (BLS); Certification as a surgical technologist (CST or TS-C); OR graduate of an accredited AA/AS degree program, with expectation that certification as a surgical technologist will be obtained within three years from date of hire

Experience
-
Required: Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a surgical technologist in an acute multi-specialty environment, evidencing independent performance in a variety of surgical specialties with one (1) year of experience as a surgical technologist working exclusively in a cardio-thoracic operating arena.

Essential Responsibilities
-
Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
-
Demonstrates and maintains aseptic technique according to the policies and procedures of Surgical Services.
-
Demonstrates competency and knowledge of the surgical environment regarding traffic patterns and contamination of the sterile field.
-
Anticipates surgeon’s needs by review of preference card and procuring appropriate supplies prior to start of case.
-
Maintains orderly instrument table and surgical field.
-
Remains attentive to the progression of the case in order to anticipate surgeon’s needs.
-
Verbally verifies and labels medications and irrigations on the back table with perioperative nurse.
-
Maintains and documents accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the perioperative nurse.
-
Properly disposes of all sharps and biohazardous waste.
-
Accurately identifies surgical specimen and transfers to the perioperative nurse.

Prepares instruments for cleaning and resterilization.
-
Assists with putting away supplies and room turnover.
-
Contributes to maximum efficiency of the surgical line up in order to adhere to surgical start times.

Demonstrates cost effectiveness by using judgment when opening and using supplies.
-
Keeps current with new intraoperative techniques and equipment through participation in unit based and continuing education.

Acts as a preceptor to new staff and students.
-
Acts as resource for all cardiothoracic procedures.
-
Assists in cardiovascular thoracic surgical procedures, to include vein harvesting techniques
-
Assists in invasive cardiovascular thoracic procedures, to include but not limited to transcatheter aortic valve replacement, minimally invasive valve replacement, thorascopic maze, convergent procedures

Assists in the placement of cardio/pulmonary assist devices (i.e.; Balloon pump, Impella device)
-
Assists in the process of cannulation for cardio/pulmonary bypass with a thorough understanding of perfusion lines, cannula options, and all other necessary supplies needed to cannulate

Ensures functionality and maintenance of specialty equipment and instruments.
