Job Objective:

Responsible and accountable for the fiscal, clinical and personnel functions of individual department(s) on a 24-hour basis. Develops and utilizes mechanisms for directing, evaluating and controlling operational activities towards accomplishment of divisional effectiveness and efficiency. Responsible and accountable for developing, implementing, and integrating performance improvement plan into unit practice. Assures implementation and maintenance of departmental/hospital Policies, Procedures and Standards of Care. Assures all State and Federal laws are in compliance in areas of responsibility. Assures all JCAHO, CMS and appropriate AORN standards are followed in areas of responsibility.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Implements operational changes to meet regulatory (local, state, national) requirements and maintains area of responsibility in a state of continual readiness for Joint Commission, CMS, and DHS surveys.
  • Creates a work environment which allows participation in order to promote engagement, retention, productivity, diversity, employee safety, equity and inclusion.
  • Plans and conducts regular meetings discussing issues and performance improvement in areas of responsibility with recording of meeting minutes and follow-up.
  • Prepares annual budget for areas of responsibility and controls operational activities towards accomplishment of divisional efficiency.
  • Adopts a total performance improvement approach to work that includes employee empowerment, managing with data, a philosophy of continuous improvement, a customer orientated attitude and a work methodology that minimizes error; this includes developing and maintaining quality-monitoring systems in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Reports performance improvement results and addresses any problems or issues accurately and timely.
  • Organizes and plans all activities in an effective manner; this includes organizing and delegating work in an effective manner, establishing appropriate time frames for completion of work and providing necessary leadership and mentorship to ensure effective work results.
  • Promotes continued professional growth, self-development and development of staff through attendance at hospital in-service/lectures, professional seminars, conferences, professional associations, and other means.
  • Develops and maintains open lines of communication between the team members; in addition, the incumbent is responsible for developing communication tools to keep customers informed of changes, developments, services, policies and results of areas of responsibility.
  • Monitors daily schedule for timely flow, on time starts and reduced wait times/turnaround times.
  • Communicates closely with surgeons and anesthesiologists keeping them informed of scheduling issues, any scheduling delays and patient care issues.
  • Ensures National Patient Safety Goals are adhered to and works closely with clinical staff in compliance among all staff and physicians.

  • Collaborates with other departments, disciplines and leaders including Information Systems, Clinical Informatics, and Clinical Education to ensure the plan, design and implementation of business and operational need as applicable within assigned areas.
