  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • Performs specimen receipt and processing/handling. Works under the supervision of the CLS or CLS supervisor. Load specimens onto automated instrumentation including but not limited to chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and the blood culture analyzers. Assists with delivery of blood products, as needed. Performs phlebotomy as needed, if certified.

      • Preferred: Minimum 1 year in a hospital environment, or healthcare related field.
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with EMC’s Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Receives collected samples into laboratory information system, prioritizes, and distributes samples to CLS to facilitate appropriate turnaround times
    • Cancels and re-orders tests as needed so that specimen accession numbers are properly interfaced. Combines and separates patient accession numbers as needed to ensure optimal efficiency.
    • Monitors previously collected samples for orders, and follows up with ED unit secretary if orders are not place within a short time frame to ensure timely ordering and reporting of patient results.
    • Monitors ED tracking system and LIS pending to proactively address potential delays.
    • Follows up with Unit Secretary or RN if no orders received within an appropriate time frame for specimens already drawn.
    • Utilizes time productively: maintains cleanliness (including disinfecting work area), reorders and restocks supplies, assists co-workers with departmental tasks
    • Routes specimens to appropriate bench in laboratory. Centrifuges plasma and serum samples, then routes to appropriate bench.
    • Assists CLS with report delivery if needed.
    • Answers phone and routes calls appropriately.
    • Demonstrates proficiency on  laboratory equipment (Pneumatic Tube System, computers, centrifuge, fax, copier, printers, etc.)
    • Sends laboratory tests not performed in Stat Lab to Main Lab via tube system, or by walking sample over if needed.
    • Monitors turnaround time of tests performed in Main Lab and proactively follows up to ensure appropriate turnaround times during instrument downtimes. 
    • Files laboratory results
    • Complies with all State and federal regulations
    • Delivers blood components, if needed.
    • Complies with hospital and Laboratory safety policies and procedures
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
