  • Qualifications
    • Education
      • Required: Graduate from an AMA, CoARC or JRCRTE approved Respiratory Therapy program with an Associates Degree; current and valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
      • Preferred: Bachelor degree in Respiratory Therapy, Management, or related field
    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: Current and valid Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license from the Respiratory Care Board of California (RCBC). Current and valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and current and valid BLS, PALS and ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
      • Preferred: Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
      • Preferred: NRP certification from the American Heart Association, NPS. 
    • Experience
      • Required: A minimum of two (2) years of acute care hospital experience; a minimum of three (3) years experience providing respiratory care services per established protocol.
      • Preferred: Certification or credential in management or related field
      • Preferred: Minimum of one (1) year in a lead position in an acute care hospital  
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Leads a staff of Respiratory Care Practitioners.
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Promotes and provides a safe and effective Respiratory Care to patients and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Performs patient assessment and develops an appropriate plan of care according to hospital policy and protocols and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Demonstrates the care and operation of respiratory therapy equipment according to technical specifications and application of equipment and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Performs routine respiratory care procedures as appropriate for clinical patient care areas according to hospital policy or protocols and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Performs respiratory care procedures as appropriate for critical care areas according to hospital policy or protocols and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Performs charting and documentation that is consistently complete, accurate, legible and informative and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Provides teaching and educational material to the patient and/or significant others concerning respiratory therapy and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Self-sufficient in seeking resource; may have specialized skills; demonstrates significant problem solving skills with respiratory modalities in the clinical setting.
    • Complies with policies; uses discretion and follows through with areas of concern and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Adheres to hospital infection control guidelines, body mechanics and safety, equipment usage and care and ensures the same of employees under leadership.
    • Demonstrates adaptability to working overtime and altering work schedule when priority respiratory therapy affects immediate patient care.
    • Participates in activities resulting in professional and departmental growth. Attends continuing education programs to promote professional growth and maintains licensure in a timely manner.

    • Participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assessment activities, and interdisciplinary teams as appropriate.
    • Actively participates in the department’s Performance Improvement program by collecting raw data, analyzing same with the Manager, generating reports, and applying final conclusions to departmental operations and clinical practice to assure that EMC’s level of practice is on pat with facilities used/viewed as benchmarks.
    • Provides specialized care (e.g. bronchoscopy, trans-tracheal oxygenation)
    • Provides timely feedback to the team concerning performance; Allocates resources according to priorities; Works within the boundaries of department budget; Communicates with personnel and promotes teamwork; Recommends and insures appropriate staffing levels.
    • In collaboration with the Manager and Director, Respiratory Care Services, manages personnel issues for assigned shift (e.g., work schedule, staffing, counseling, performance evaluations).
    • In collaboration with the Director, Respiratory Care Services, assures compliance with departmental, facility, local, state, federal, and accreditation standards, rules, and regulation
    • Provides coverage for other clinical leads as needed.
    • Competent to work in all areas of the hospital. 
    • Assures the provision of respiratory care services in a timely, clinically appropriate manner during assigned shift.
    • Responsible for intubation procedures requiring specialized training depending on staffing needs.
    • Maintains communication between physicians, nursing, and other departments as part of the health care delivery team.
    • Provides routine and critical respiratory care modalities for the adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients.
    • Meets the specific needs of varying age groups, may be gained through previous education, experience, and/or additional education and training.
