  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • In collaboration with the Director, Respiratory Care, designs, operates, evaluates, and improves a comprehensive staff development program for Respiratory Care Services. This position will focus on performance improvement goals, Quality Improvement and Assessment (QI/QA) budgetary goals, and the evaluation and implementation of new modalities and products. This position is responsible for working with physicians, patients, and staff to maintain the high quality care Respiratory Care Services is recognized for. This position will be a working clinical position as well as providing coverage for the Respiratory Team Leads as needed. The Manager is responsible for new employee orientation, annual compliance competencies, and staff continuing education presentations. Maintain records of staff competencies, continuing education and equipment evaluations With the Director, identifies Lo-Volume High-Risk procedures to be monitored. Develops and Maintains initial and annual competencies. Tracks expiring staff licensure and certifications. Must be competent to work in all areas of the hospital.

  • Qualifications
    • Education
      • Required: Graduate of AMA or JCRTE approved program for Respiratory Therapy with a minimum of Associate Degree in Applied Sciences.
      • Preferred: Advanced Degree in Respiratory Therapy or related science/business degree is preferred
    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: Registered Respiratory Therapist of the NBRC. Valid California State Licensure. American Heart Association BLS and ACLS.
      • Preferred: NRP, and PALS
    • Experience
      • Required: A minimum of six years of previous patient care delivery, including experiences with neonatal, pediatric, adult care, critical care, pulmonary function/diagnostics, and emergency care. A minimum four years of supervisory or team leader experience.
      • Preferred: Prior experience as a Clinical Supervisor or Manager of an acute care respiratory department
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Designs, implements, evaluates, and improves the new employee (Staff, Per Diem, Registry, Traveler) initial orientation program
    • In collaboration with the Manager, designs, implements, evaluates, and improves a comprehensive department competency program to address new technology, medications, processes, supplies, policies, procedures, protocols, and compliance topics.
    • In collaboration with the Manager, designs, implements, evaluates, and improves a comprehensive department competency program specifically focused on the provision of respiratory care services per established protocol and in compliance with current regulatory and professional standards.
    • In collaboration with the Manager, designs, implements, evaluates, and improves interdepartmental orientation/education programs (e.g., CNA orientation, new RN grad orientation, Nursing Skills Days, new technology training for pulmonary physicians/ICU RNs)
    • Designs, implements, evaluates, and improves a comprehensive department continuing education program to include regularly scheduled presentations to staff.
    • Actively participates in the department’s Performance Improvement program by collecting raw data, analyzing same with the Manager, generating reports, and applying final conclusions to the department’s staff development program to assure that EMC’s level of practice is on par with facilities used/viewed as benchmarks.
    • Participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assessment activities, and interdisciplinary teams as appropriate.
    • Assists the Manager with the design, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
    • Promotes and provides safe and effective Respiratory Care to patients to maintain direct patient care skills.
    • Performs patient assessment and develops an appropriate plan of care according to hospital policy and protocols.
    • Demonstrates the care and operation of respiratory therapy equipment according to technical specifications and application of equipment.
    • Performs routine respiratory care procedures as appropriate for clinical patient care areas according to hospital policy and protocols.
    • Performs respiratory care procedures as appropriate for critical care areas according to hospital policy and protocols.
    • Performs charting and documentation that is consistently complete, accurate, legible and informative.
    • Serves as the main department resource with teaching and providing educational material to patients and/or significant others concerning respiratory care and pulmonary disease.
    • Responds to emergency situations and provides appropriate and timely treatments; as scheduled and necessary, performs shift supervision during the absence of another Supervisor.
    • Self-sufficient in seeking resources; demonstrates significant problem solving and critical thinking skills with respiratory modalities in the clinical setting and educational issues in the didactic/laboratory setting.
    • Able to organize an assigned workload and set priorities to meet time requirements.
    • Complies with policies; uses discretion and follows through with areas of concern.
    • Adheres to hospital infection control guidelines, body mechanics and safety, equipment usage and care.
    • Demonstrates adaptability to working overtime and altering work schedule when priority respiratory therapy affects immediate patient care and when competency issues require immediate attention.
    • Participates in activities resulting in professional and departmental growth.
    • Attends continuing education programs to promote professional growth.
    • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
    • Maintains a high productivity level.
    • Able to prioritize accordingly and maintains a high level of organization.
    • Completes tasks in allotted time.
    • Assumes relief shift supervisor duties as scheduled.
    • Performs other duties as requested.
