  • Qualifications
    • Education
      • Required: Bachelor’s Degree preferably in a healthcare related field
      • Preferred: Bachelor’s in Nursing or Doctorate in Juris Prudence (law degree)
    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) and/or CPHQ (Certified Professional in Health Care Quality); or certification eligible and obtains certificate within 6 months
      • Preferred: Registered Nursing license
    • Experience
      • Required: Five (5) years current experience in acute care hospital or health care system
      • Required: Three (3) years current experience in organization performance or risk management
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Participates in the Root Cause Analysis/Sentinel Event investigations and process.
    • Manages and remedies potential patient safety issues, including events that are defined by the Safe Medical Device Act.
    • Identifies potentially compensable events and acts as liaison with the Quality and Law departments.
    • Identifies equipment and evidence required for investigation; facilitates sequestering of same.
    • Ensures that the Quality Council receives reports on performance relative to risk management activities.
    • Acts as liaison with Patients Relations and the Leadership.
    • Researches current risk management and patient safety issues, presents updates to leadership, medical staff, and hospital staff, as appropriate.
    • Maintains current knowledge base of regulatory and accreditation requirements and standards and ensures that the hospital is in compliance with such requirements as they relate to risk management, and effectively communicates these standards and regulations to leadership, medical staff, hospital staff, as appropriate.
    • Provides orientation on the hospital regarding the Risk Management program to new employees, and in-services to staff, as indicated.
    • Reviews, maintains and coordinates all lines of insurance, (professional liability, umbrella, directors and officers, EPL, Property, Automobile, etc.).
    • Monitors existing claims and directly and proactively oversees outside counsel’s management of litigation, statements for legal services, strategy and instructions, evaluation of settlement recommendations from outside counsel and to general counsel for approval.
    • Maintains and prepares loss runs and payment histories for Finance and outside actuaries and supports evaluation and adjustment of reserves
    • Coordinates and manages the hospital Risk Management program, including the incident reporting system, management of all new claims and insurance coordination.
    • Compiles information and reports on incident trends to appropriate personnel and committees.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
