  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • The Coordinator Surgical Service Line performs clinical care activities and is responsible for the coordination of the technical arena of specialty perioperative service for patients, physicians, and other identified customers. The Coordinator makes recommendations for supply and technical policies and procedures, performance improvements, and coordinates and procures supplies and equipment for the assigned specialty service.

    • Education
      • Required: Successful completion of OR Tech training program
    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: American Heart Association BLS
      • Required: Certification upon hire or within 6 months
    • Experience
      • Required:10+ years OR experience
      • Preferred: 5 years experience in Neurosurgery; preferably a leadership role
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations
    • Performs all functions of a Surgical Technologist
    • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the surgical procedure, instrumentation, supplies and equipment needed. Initiates discussions, develops plans, and executes cost containment ideas with team in order to comply with departmental plan to meet budget goals
    • Drives efforts to maximize efficiency of the surgical line-up in order to adhere to surgical start times for operating rooms and provides case time information and develops efficient schedules to progress surgeries
    • Assists Surgery Scheduling department with case codes, and case updating as needed
    • Maintains and updates preference cards related to designated specialty service
    • Orders and establishes par levels and maintains ancillary supplies related to neurosurgery service
    • Orders and maintains inventory of orthopedic instruments and accessories and other supplies
    • Ensures quality of work by Central Sterile regarding cleaning and sterilization of neurosurgery instruments and accessories
    • Acts as liaison to surgeons and visiting surgical teams for the designated surgical specialty
    • Supports new surgeons within the assigned service line
    • Coordinates routine preventative maintenance and ensures functionality of all neurosurgical specialty equipment
    • Provides clinical expertise and is a resource to solve neurosurgery specialty-related issues
    • Responds appropriately to any unanticipated or emergency situation that may arise intra-operatively
    • Utilizes equipment properly, according to manufacturer’s recommendation and adhering to OR protocols
    • Follows the hospital's policy and procedures on discarding contaminated and hazardous materials
    • Determines capital budget items for neurosurgery service. Prepares for surgery in an acceptable time frame
    • Prioritizes workload and prepares for the specific operative procedure utilizing appropriate Preference Care/Case Cart Requisition
    • Ensures OR is stocked and ready for each case
    • Provides patient care for the specific surgical case utilizing PO policies and procedures as a reference
    • Contributes to an ongoing cost savings effort by negotiating discounts with all vendors in collaboration with Materials Management
    • Assists with staffing assignments as needed
    • Receives tissue and maintains tissue log sheets for the frozen, refrigerated and ambient tissue products
    • Communicates with surgeons in an efficient and effective manner providing excellent customer service
    • Serve on the ORVAT, and surgical specialty committees as assigned
    • Assists in training and orientation of other staff members
    • Works with new surgeons to develop equipment and instrumentation needs
    • Performs other duties as needed
