  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • This position is responsible for assisting the physician by preparing the patient for the treadmill test and monitoring the patient while on the treadmill.

  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Produces recordings of electromotive variations in patient’s heart muscle using electrocardiographs to provide data for diagnosis; responsible for attaching monitor electrodes to patients.
    • Responsible for providing necessary instructions and information to patients regarding proper management of the monitor.
    • Monitors electrocardiograms for abnormal patterns.
    • Edits and forwards final test results to attending physicians for analysis and interpretation.
    • Produces recordings of electromotive variations in action of heart muscle using electrocardiograph while patient walks on treadmill, under the direction of physician to provide data for diagnosis.
    • Attaches electrodes to patient’s arms, legs and chest area, according to specified pattern and connects electrode leads to electrocardiograph to obtain electrocardiogram.
    • Explains testing procedures to patient and obtains consent form.
    • Responsible for starting treadmill at speed directed by physician while recording data on the electrocardiograph, such as angle and speed of treadmill, patient’s indications of pain and measurements of blood pressure.
    • Informs physician of wave abnormalities on electrocardiograms.
    • Responsible for standing alongside patient during test to lend support if necessary.
    • Responsible for removing recorder strop printout from machine upon conclusion of test to obtain permanent record of test.
    • Edits and mounts representative samples of tracings for patient’s record, indication time of rest measurement and bodily factors that could have affected recording.
    • Analyzes data from cardiac function monitoring device worn by patients for use in diagnosis of cardiovascular disorders.
    • Places magnetic tape or cassette from the patients monitor in scanner to produce audio and visual representation of heart activity.
    • Adjusts scanner controls that regulate taped sounds associated with heart activity and focus video representation of sounds on scanner screen.
    • Observes scanner screen to identify irregularities in patient cardiac patterns, utilizing knowledge of regular and irregular cardiac function patterns or verifies data provided by computer program that automatically scans, analyzes, identifies and prints irregular heart patterns.
    • Prints sections of abnormal heart patterns of full disclosure tape for physicians.
    • Analyzes information patient diary to identify incidents that correspond to heart pattern irregularities detected on heart monitor.
    • Records findings on report form and forwards tapes, form, patient diary and printouts of heart patters to interpreting physician.
    • Attaches electrodes to patient’s chests and connects electrodes to monitor following standard procedure.
    • Measure distances between peaks and valleys of heart activity patterns, using calipers, to obtain data for further analysis.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor or physician.
