Job Objective:

Performs diagnostic pulmonary function testing including spirometry, arterial blood gas analysis, bronchoscopy assists, functional reserve capacity, diffusing capacity and lung volume determinations on all patient populations served. Assists in the Pulmonary Clinic, and performs exercise oximetry analysis.

Job Description:

Education:

Required: Graduate from an associate degree Respiratory Therapy training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Allied Health Professions (CAAHEP) in collaboration with the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)

Licensure/Certification:

Required: Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license from the Respiratory Care Board of California (RCBC); Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); American Heart Association BLS; AHA ACLS within ninety (90) days of hire
Preferred: Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT)

Experience:

Required: Two (2) years of acute care hospital respiratory care or pulmonary function experience or one (1) year of experience performing pulmonary function testing with CPFT or RPFT credential

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
  • Performs Pulmonary Function Testing accurately and timely according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs Arterial Blood Gas specimen collection and analysis according to policy and procedure.
  • Participates in scheduling of patients with departmental secretaries and physician’s offices.
  • Gathers statistical data as it pertains to the Pulmonary Laboratory.
  • Participates in activities, which results in professional and department growth; functions as a resource person for medical staff, public, patients, families and guests.
  • Prioritizes workload according to patient’s needs.
  • Performs outpatient respiratory therapy treatments according to policy and procedures.
  • Assists pulmonary physicians with in and outpatient bronchoscopy procedures and thoracentesis procedures.
  • Documents pertinent information at the time of testing.
  • Maintains communication between physicians, nursing and other departments as part of the health care delivery team.
  • Processes billing charges or credits as assigned.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assessment activities and interdisciplinary teams as appropriate.
  • Maintains clean, well-stocked equipment with supplies and “in good working order” after each shift; sterilizes/disinfects equipment according to policy and procedure.
  • Reports any unsafe or mal-functioning equipment to the appropriate personnel and takes the necessary step in processing reported equipment.
  • Maintains a high productivity level.
  • Completes tasks in allotted time at the end of each shift.
  • Assists with photocopying, filing, charting of reports in-patients medical record as needed.
  • May be required to assist with transferring of patients.

Essential Skils:

  • Ability to maintain and operate equipment used in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory and Bronchoscopy Suite
  • Proficient in the principles of pulmonary function testing and respiratory therapy
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and unexpected situations
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a positive and professional manner
  • Ability to communicate with patients, healthcare professionals, and staff to ensure clear and accurate exchange of information
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines
  • Ability to document and process procedures on a daily basis in the department records
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to identify basic EKG rhythms/arrhythmias
