Job Objective:

Responsible for optimal provision of quality patient care and assumes clinical and operational management responsibility during off-duties hours for a specific day, evening or night shift, providing continuity and coordination of all nursing unit activities.

Job Description:

Education:

Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s in Nursing if hired after July 1, 2012

Licensure/Certification:

Required: California Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure and American Heart Association BLS; ACLS within 90 days of hire

Experience:

Required: Three (3) years of clinical RN experience in an acute care setting

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
  • Functions as a role model for organizational values.
  • Supports management of the various units in a manner that helps to meet agreed upon benchmark standards in terms of Productivity, Efficiency and Financial Stability.
  • Promotes positive climate and morale of the hospital. Develops effective relationships with peers and staff; provides recognition for good work performance and gives positive feedback.
  • Implements and maintains Five Star Standards for patients and visitors. Monitors department specific standards of care practice. Rounds on each unit to evaluate care and services of hospitalized patients. Immediate service recovery on all patient care problems/issues, maintaining communication with all parties involved. Appropriately delegates when applicable. Notifies appropriate people of problems related to patient care and intervenes appropriately.
  • Assists in performance evaluation by providing information to Clinical Director about staff performance.
  • Coaches and educates staff nurses regarding clinical questions, acts as a mentor to new staff. Creates an environment, which encourages maximum development of personal and professional potential of personnel.
  • Maintains zero tolerance attitude toward service standard enforcement. Takes immediate action in serious disciplinary situations, documents action taken and the rationale for the decision. Maintains communication with all parties involved
  • Collaborates with staff regarding physician notification.
  • Retains clinical skills for execution of patient care as necessary; participates in continuing education workshops, annual skills day, seminars and attends committees/meetings as assigned.
  • Rounds consistently on each unit including ED, OR, and SPU to ensure patient flow and ensure staff needs are being met.
  • Assists with collection of data for nursing P.I. projects.
  • Assists in monitoring hospital readiness in JACAHO, California and Federal standards.
  • Facilitates availability of adequate material resources and supplies to ensure that staff has the material and equipment necessary to do their job.
  • Maintains confidentiality and trust of peers, patient’s, staff, physicians, visitors and administration.
  • Listens objectively to staff complaints, problems, concerns and involves the staff corrective follow through.
  • Reviews Press Ganey and Gallup scores, assists to develop action plans for improvement.
  • Assures appropriate patient placement based on diagnosis, clinical condition and infection control practices. Works closely with nursing units and housekeeping to maintain accurate bed availability list and assure timely placement of patients and appropriate staffing guidelines are met.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in assessing shift staffing needs consistent with patient mix, census and acuity levels. Strives to maintain budgetary goals.

Essential Skils:

  • Ability to work as a liaison between patient, family, nurse, physician and/or transferring facility to provide smooth transition into acute care setting
  • Possesses the skill and knowledge to coordinate appropriate patient placement to various nursing units (considering patient needs, acuity and availability of competent nursing staff)
  • Ability to adjust staffing in collaboration with Centralized Staffing Office to meet budgetary constraints
  • Ability to Supervise various units and staff in collaboration with and the absence of the Director
  • Knowledge of emergency procedure protocol and has the ability to coordinate an emergency event
  • Knowledgeable of various hospital policies
  • Ability to function as a resource for all departments in problem solving related to patient care
  • Has knowledge of JCAHO and CA State regulations, requirements and standard of nursing practice, polices and procedures
