Job Description:

Education:

Required: Associate’s degree in Ultrasound Technology

Licensure/Certification:

Required: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with OB/GYN or Fetal Echocardiography specialty; American Heart Association BLS
Preferred: Nuchal Translucency Certification (The Fetal Medicine Foundation or ARDMS registry), Nuchal translucency certification through NTQR/Fetal Maternal Foundation, Nasal Bone certification, or CLEAR certification

Experience:

Required: Three (3) years of general scanning experience including one (1) year of perinatal scanning experience

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
  • Uses independent judgment and systematic problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.
  • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
  • Generates reports on the PACS system (Viewpoint), works with the attending physician to visualize sonographic examination on the OB view workstations.
  • Provides summary findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management; prepares accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports and contacts referring physicians when required, according to established procedures.
  • Reviews adequacy of images and is aware of limitations of exam due to gestational age, fetal position, or patient habitus.
  • Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required; prepares and cleans rooms and sterilizes equipment as needed; checks equipment for optimal set-up and determines correct equipment usage.
  • Asks for assistance and informs Perinatologist of problems as needed.
  • Obtains appropriate medical history before patient examination and prepares patient for exam; follows department protocols for each exam.
  • Documents any changes in patient condition using appropriate forms and contacts nurse when necessary.
  • Keeps patient informed of exam procedures, any delays, and allows patient to ask questions regarding the procedure.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with Perinatology and Emergency Department Physicians and staff on patient exam, delays, concerns and care.
  • Sets up sterile trays and assists the Radiologist in invasive procedures with ultrasound guidance and reporting all deficiencies to the immediate supervisor.
  • Documents appropriately in: PACS, Patient chart, required forms and billing.
  • Covers for receptionist and tech assistant as needed.
  • May be need to work additional shifts and different shifts as required.
  • Enters correct charges and supplies in appropriate computer system.
  • Gives accurate and detailed interpretations of exams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Skils:

  • Ability to perform portable exams in the operating room
  • Knowledge of all invasive and non-invasive ultrasound procedures
  • Knowledge of Operating Room sterile field procedures
  • Proficient in all diagnostic obstetric ultrasound imaging, portable and vascular exams; proficient in fetal anatomy, physiology and the processes of both genetic and teratogenic abnormalities
  • Ability to communicate with patients, physicians, and coworkers to ensure clear and accurate exchange of information
  • Knowledge of all ultrasound equipment and computer based systems
  • Proficient in using all ultrasound equipment
  • Knowledge of patient age-specific needs and ability to provide appropriate care
  • Ability to prioritize work load
  • Ability to perform high technical quality sonographic images
  • Ability to provide and accept feedback, approachable, adaptable, professional and respectful
