  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • A professional nurse who develops a Plan of Care that is consistent with the needs appropriate to the age of the patient. Functions as an RN first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures and throughout the perioperative continuum in accordance with scope of practice credentials, privileges, experience, education, and competency verification

    • Education
      • Required: BSN or MSN  if hired after July 1, 2012

    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: California RN license; American Heart Association BLS; AHA ACLS; Completion of RNFA Didactic Course

    • Experience
      • Required: Two (2) years of perioperative nursing experience

  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Participate in preoperative assessment and planning for surgical patients specific to RNFA activities (e.g.anatomical exposure, wound closure) in collaboration with perioperative team members.
    • Demonstrates implementation skills in accordance with EMH Standards of Care, policies, procedures, and Nurse Practice Act.
    • Evaluates effectiveness of nursing and medical interventions.
    • Consistently documents in accordance with EMH policies and procedures.
    • Consistently administers medications and documents in compliance with medication administration policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrates competency in the operation of equipment specific to clinical area.
    • Completes age specific competency annually.
    • Complies with departmental plan to meet budget goals.
    • Independently sets priorities and implements nursing activities in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.
    • Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of nursing and medical interventions.
    • Formulates, implements and documents an individual teaching plan for each patient.
    • Delegate activities appropriately to other team members.
    • Provides patient care in a cost-effective high-quality manner.
    • Prioritizes critical situations and acts in a timely manner.
    • Ensures Interventions are based on priorities and are individualized and consistent with plan of care.
    • Maintains aseptic technique according to the policies and procedures of Surgical Services.
    • Anticipates surgeons needs by review of preference card and procuring appropriate supplies prior to start of case.
    • Remains attentive to the progression of the case in order to anticipate surgeon’s needs.
    • Properly disposes of all sharps and biohazardous waste.
    • Assists with putting away supplies and room turnover.
    • Contributes to maximum efficiency of the surgical line up in order to adhere to surgical start times.
    • Demonstrates cost effectiveness by using judgment when opening and using supplies.
    • Keeps current with new intraoperative techniques and equipment through participation in unit based and continuing education.
    • Acts as a preceptor to new staff and students.
    • Positions the patient to provide access to the operative site while maximizing patient safety and comfort, protecting the patient from injury.
    • Provides intra-operative exposure and retraction.
      • Retracts tissues or organs by use of the hand
      • Places and holds surgical retractors
      • Packs sponges or laparotomy pads into body cavities to hold tissues or organs out of the operative field
      • Manages all instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeon’s view
    • Sutures tissue, using instruments and suture material.
      • Correctly approximates tissue layers
      • Approximates tissue appropriately to avoid excess tension and tissue necrosis
      • Ties knots firmly to avoid slipping
      • Uses staples, clips or other devices to approximate tissue
    • Handles tissues and manipulates instruments to perform:
      • Superficial dissection
      • Aspirating and sponging of blood and other fluids from the operative site
      • Placing suture ligatures in the muscle, subcutaneous and skin layers
      • Placing hemoclips or other ligating devices on bleeders
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
