As the U.S. healthcare delivery system undergoes a major transformation, much of patient care has moved from acute care settings to outpatient and community environments. According to a study by the American Hospital Association, inpatient admissions fell about 2% in 2013, following a trend that began in 2009. Outpatient visits, on the other hand, rose by 1.2% that year, and industry experts say they’ll continue to climb.
