  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • The RN-Emeritus Registered Nurse Mentor confers knowledge from one generation of nurse to the next by participating in mentoring relationships with graduate and new hire nurses who are participating in the Nurse Residency program. The Emeritus RN program extends the work-life of the experienced RN while enhancing retention of organizational wisdom and professional knowledge. The Emeritus RN uses knowledge accumulated over a course of a nursing career to provide support to nursing team members in specific areas of strategic priority related to safety, quality, patient experience and team member support/engagement

  • Qualifications
    • Education
      • Required: Associate degree in Nursing; BSN or MSN or enrollment in an RN-BSN or RN-MSN program within 1 year of hire and completion within 5 years of hire if hired after March 30, 2024.

    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: California RN licensure
      • Preferred: Current BLS certification; Certified in specialty practice area
    • Experience
      • Required: Ten (10) years of RN experience
      • Preferred: Experience in nursing professional development
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Provides support to nursing team members in specific areas of strategic priority related to safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and team member engagement at the directions of and under the supervision of department leaders.
    • Provides mentorship to new graduate and less experienced nurses by sharing nursing knowledge and clinical reasoning expertise. Offers guidance related to delivery of care including assessment, implementation, coordination, teaching, consulting, and evaluation of patient care.
    • Utilizes a combination of knowledge, experience and situational awareness to provide support for safe, high quality, individualized care to patients.
    • Delegates in accordance with applicable legal and policy parameters. Recognizes when there is a need for further intervention and escalates appropriately.
    • Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning for continued professional growth and education that reflects competence, knowledge and understanding of current nursing practice.
    • Establishes a caregiver-patient relationship that is built on mutual trust, respect, compassion and communication to meet the unique needs of each.
    • Facilitates and assesses learning activities related to clinical competencies, departmental/organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and use of clinical information technologies.
    • Collaborates with nursing leaders and staff to assess learning needs and competencies of staff.
    • Serves as a consultant/mentor for staff in clinical practice and professional development.
    • Participates in the coordination and delivery of simulation center activities for staff training and competency evaluation.
    • Creates and nurtures a safe and non-punitive learning environment for the novice, advanced beginner and staff nurses by mentoring and engaging in developmental activities.
    • Attend mentorship training and ongoing professional development activities.
    • Shares knowledge and acts as a professional resource to other members of the health care team.
      • Supports and participates in Unit Based Council initiatives
      • Contributes to professional growth of peers by providing feedback through peer coaching and evaluation
      • Strives to be a life-long learner continuing to enroll and complete classes and courses to advance and increase new clinical knowledge
    • Recognizes, accepts responsibility for, and maintains commitment to professional development and clinical competency.
      • Attends required professional development sessions and staff meetings. If unable to attend, review minutes or discuss proceedings of meetings with peers or managers
      • Identifies personal knowledge deficits and seeks resources/consultation to ensure safe patient care
      • Utilizes all channels of communication including reading organizational email regularly to obtain knowledge, transmit information, address concerns, and solve problems
      • Embraces change and continuously identifies opportunities for improvement by demonstrating a commitment to utilizing evidence-based practice
    • Champions safety, quality and high reliability initiatives and providing evidence of the efficacy of the initiatives in practice.
    • Integrates new knowledge, development of new skills and increases critical thinking capacity of the novice nurse as they advance in the development of clinical practice.
    • In concert with the clinical educator, may provide a variety of appropriate learning experiences to the novice nurse for professional development. This could include learning modules, journal clubs, group learning, etc.
    • Work closely and collaboratively with various nursing and non-nursing departments to meet organizational goals.
    • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
