Job Description:

Education:

Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s degree in Nursing

Licensure/Certification:

Required: California Registered Nurse (RN) licensure; Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from American Heart Association (AHA)

Experience:

Required: Five (5) years of clinical RN experience
Preferred: Leadership experience; Critical Care, Emergency Room, or Cardiac Procedural Unit experience

Job Objective:

Responsible and accountable for the clinical and personnel functions of assigned units. Responsible for assisting in development, implementation and integration of performance improvement plans into unit practice. Assures implementation and maintenance of departmental/hospital Policies, Procedures and Standards of Care. Assists in assuring all State and Federal laws are in compliance in areas of responsibility. Assures all JCAHO standards are following in areas of responsibility. Coordinates on-unit and department-specific education for nursing and ancillary staff. Assists leadership in ensuring staff competency, ongoing skills assessment and opportunities for growth. Utilizes nursing research and evidence-based practice in nursing as a model for quality initiatives and nursing excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
  • Selects, develops and counsels employees consistent with Human Resources management practices.
  • Creates a work environment which allows participation in order to promote retention, productivity, diversity, employee safety and equality.
  • In collaboration with the director, plans, prepares, implements, monitors and controls the budget to ensure sound fiscal management consistent with the goals of the hospital.
  • Reports performance improvement results and addresses any problems or issues accurately and timely.
  • Organizes and plans all activities in an effective manner; this includes organizing and delegating work in an effective manner, establishing appropriate time frames for completion of work and providing necessary leadership to ensure effective work results.
  • Participates in the development of tactical plan for the areas of responsibility.
  • Implements operational changes to satisfy regulatory (local, state, national) requirements and maintains area of responsibility in a state of continual readiness for Joint Commission and DHS surveys.
  • Assists in the writing, implementing, and updating policies as appropriate.
  • Identifies the direct and indirect customers of the areas of responsibility, determines the products and services to provide based on the customer’s needs, analyzes customer satisfaction and developing actions that continually improve services (direct customers include patients, family members, physicians, employees, managers, directors, executives, students, etc. Indirect customers include board members, vendors, donors, etc.).
  • Promotes continued self-development and development of staff.
  • Develops and maintains communication tools to keep staff informed of changes, developments, services, policies and results.
  • Participates in Joint Commission inspections and other local and state regulatory inspection requirements; maintains survey readiness, compliant with JCAHO standards and state/federal regulatory bodies.
  • Selects, trains/orients, directs, coaches, evaluates, and counsels staff.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and with EMC policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that staff consistently provide high quality patient care and/or other support services that are valued by patients, physicians and each other.
  • Maintains clinical competence and assists in the management of a patient when necessary.
  • Ensures a high level of employee, patient and physician satisfaction.
  • Collaborates, plans and implements process improvement to maintain high customer satisfaction.
  • Monitors daily assignment sheets and monthly schedule to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Monitors staff timekeeping system; minimizes overtime and avoids meal penalties.
  • Oversees and coordinates Nursing Education of assigned area: coordinates orientation program for new hires and transfers; develops/coordinates education plans associated with competency validation, addresses specific populations, and promotes the development of bedside nurse leaders; incorporates the principles of adult learning in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of educational programs; coordinates and provides learning opportunities including (but not limited to) courses and classes that promote staff development and competence; utilizes feedback from physicians, directors, nursing staff and other disciplines to develop education plans for areas assigned; ensures educational programs are in alignment with the mission, vision and goals of EMC.
  • Acts as an educational consultant; disciplines on programs to facilitate excellence in patient care utilizing the Relationship-Based Care Model; consults with staff to promote professional development with career pathway or as requested by staff/leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
